My first official yoga class!

so before today I had only ever sorta taken half a yoga class. In highschool me and my friends went on a visitors pass and took a class. But because of our constant giggling we left half way through.

In these last few weeks I’ve been wondering if I had been doing the poses right, or was I pushing to hard? I really don’t have a clue.. I looked around here in cullman if there was a place were yoga classes were given. To my surprise there was! “Santosha yoga,” is the name of the studio. I checked times this morning and there was a class at 9:30 that I could make. I quickly signed up, grabbed my May and headed out the door. I didn’t know what to expect. I came in and was greeted by the instructor, everyone waved hello and seemed friendly.

I rolled out my mat and we sat down. We immediately started. I’m guessing it wasn’t 10 minutes into the class and my arms were already burning and I was working up a sweat. To my surprise I kept up with the class pretty good on most poses. My balance is something I’m proud of, but as for my flexibility I have a loooong way to go. We did this one pose where we spread out legs wide and had to fold our chest to the ground. Everyone was close to nose to the ground while I was still sitting straight up! That was as fat as I could go.

We did another pose called bird in paradise, I was a little lost at first, but after watching I did a motivated version of it. So proud of myself!

I was mostly surprised by the effect of the breathing aspect of it. Doing yoga at home I hadn’t really paid much attention to that. I’d watched a video here and there, but usually while watching tv and I would just kinda follow along with the poses but didn’t listen to the instructor in the video.

I had seen child’s pose before, looking up new poses to do. But it looked boring to me, just laying my head on the ground with my knees tucked in. But today doing child’s pose and taking deep breaths I finally understood the sensation of feeling the energy going through your body. I could feel the breath opening up my ribs and could feel the nerves in my neck all the way down my spine.

I recommend everyone that’s a new by to yoga like me, to take a class. It sure benefit me and helped me in continuing my practice

New Challenge

For 8 years now, running has been a huge part of my life.

It has introduced me to my best friends in the whole world, helped me get a scholarship for college, helped me lose my freshman.. 35.. And has helped me keep a sane mind through many stressful situations. I love everything about it, being in nature, just by myself, listening to music, and of course staying fit. I’m not a natural born athlete, I lose my fitness insanely fast. I remember when I first started, couldn’t even run a mile.. And look at me now, last month me and my BFFs ran our 3rd marathon. 26.2 miles of pleasure and torture.. As great as my love is to get out on the road, just me and my favorite shoes, it gets tough on my body. Especially since I’m tall, I often feel my back aching, begging me to “take it easy,” which is not in my vocabulary. Since Charlie has many back problems I started looking online.. Yea I’m one of those 😉 I found many articles of people that have “cured” their aches and pains with yoga. I had tried yoga a few times, but didn’t have the patience to ever stick with it. But for the last few weeks I’ve forced myself to try it and see how it would work for me. And wow.. Only a few weeks in and I already have fallen in love with it! So many challenges!! Starting off I was so impressed with the headstand, I tried it a couple times for fun and couldn’t even push my body up over my head against the wall..

But look! Just a few weeks of daily practice and unflexible me can hold a headstand! I feel improvement by the day, which I love, since I’m not a patient person. Yesterday I did a variation of the side crane pose

I’m excited to see where my newly found yoga challenge will take me. If anything the flexibility will surely help my running stride.

And for helping with back pain, usually working promos, my back will acke within a few hours. This weekend I worked standing in heels for 3 days. Although my feet felt like death, my back hadn’t hurt one bit the whole weekend! I’m looking forward to making more progress in the next months ☺️🙏
